The Missouri Department of Labor Announces Sixteen Additional Missouri Counties Eligible

for Disaster Unemployment Assistance

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations today announced an amendment to the March 19, 2008 Presidential Disaster Declaration for individual assistance to include individuals living or working in 16 additional counties.

“I am happy to have helped administer disaster assistance to even more Missourians affected by flooding,” Gov. Blunt said. “This assistance will help those whose jobs were impacted by mother nature.”

The 16 additional counties are: Butler, Callaway, Cape Girardeau, Gasconade, Howard, Laclede, Madison, McDonald, Osage, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, St. Louis, Taney and Webster. Individuals who file from these counties have no later than May 2, 2008, to file a claim for Disaster Unemployment Assistance.

Originally, 19 counties were approved for individual assistance; they are: Bollinger, Carter, Christian, Franklin, Greene, Iron, Jasper, Jefferson, Maries, Newton, Oregon, Phelps, Pulaski, Reynolds, St. Francois, Stone, Texas, Washington, and Wayne. Individuals who file from these counties have no later than May 1, 2008, to file a claim for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. With today’s additions, Missourians in 35 counties now are eligible to apply for disaster assistance.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance is intended for those who are not eligible for benefits under a state's regular unemployment insurance program. Farmers, the self-employed and others who are denied regular unemployment insurance benefits may now be eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance.

Funds for this program are provided by the federal government and do not come from the state employer payroll taxes used to finance regular unemployment insurance benefits.

Missourians who need information about how to file a claim should call (800) 788-4002.
