The Department of Labor’s Missouri Commission on Human Rights Presents the
Fifth Annual Poster and Journalism Contests
JEFFERSON CITY, MO – The Missouri Commission on Human Rights (MCHR), a Division of the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, is now accepting entries for the fifth annual Poster and Journalism contests.
The contests are designed to promote greater awareness of equal employment opportunity among students as they prepare to enter the workforce. The theme of this year’s contest is, “Equal Employment Opportunity – Make it Work in Missouri.” Students are encouraged to write a 1 to 2-page essay or design a poster around the theme. Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to enter both contests.
“These contests have been well-received by Missouri’s student body,” said MCHR Director Alisa Warren.” “Submitting their writing and artwork provides great learning experiences for the students and offers them the opportunity to receive a monetary reward for their creativity,” added Warren.
The contests’ theme focuses on workplace acceptance of all people, and what it means to realize the dream of employment that is non-discriminatory, accessible, and open to everyone – regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, disability or age (40-69). The MCHR believes that Equal Employment Opportunity is about people working together, regardless of their differences, and how a diverse workplace enriches the lives of everyone.
First-place winners in each category will be awarded a $500 prize; second-place winners will receive a $250 prize; and third-place winners will receive $100.
The winners’ schools and teacher/department also will receive monetary prizes. The first-place students’ school will receive $250 for the school and $250 for the teacher/department; second place will receive $125 for the school and $125 for the teacher/department; and third place will receive $50 for the school and $50 for the teacher/department. More information about the contest rules and prizes is available at http://www.dolir.mo.gov/hr/poster/poster.htm.
The contest winners, their parents, principal and teacher will all be guests of the MCHR during a recognition luncheon in Jefferson City this spring.
