Most recipients of the Best Safety Record Award have zero lost time injuries.  Other criteria for this award include number of reportable hours and injuries.  “SEMMSA was established nearly 36 years ago to stem the tide of mining related injuries and create a forum to address safety concerns,” said Allen Dillingham, director of the Division of Labor Standards.  “Missouri’s Mine and Cave Safety and Health Program has been a close partner with SEMMSA over the years and look forward to working with such a quality organization that has done so much to change the culture of safety at the mine site.”

The Mine and Cave Safety and Health Program provides no-cost training and consultation to mine owners and workers, as well as contractors, through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration.  Consultation provides services in the areas of training and training plan development, mine rescue, hazard awareness and abatement, risk assessment and alternative solutions to mine hazard abatement.  The program’s mine safety instructors trained more than 5,700 Missouri miners in federal fiscal year 2005.
