Missouri Department of Labor Calls Attention to Crime Victims’ Rights Week
Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations is among various federal, state and local entities raising awareness and honoring victims of crimes during Crime Victims’ Week, April 23 – 29, 2006. The theme for the 2006 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is “Victims’ Rights: Strength in Unity” and pays tribute to crime victims and survivors who have joined together in mutual support and advocacy to promote victims’ rights and services.
“Crime victimization can dramatically change a person's life,” said Katharine Barondeau, acting director of the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. “Crime Victims’ Rights Week gives Missouri an opportunity to educate our communities about the devastating impacts of violent crimes and also recognize the efforts of professionals and volunteers who dedicate their lives to helping victims of crime.”
The Department, in conjunction with MADD Missouri, MO Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, MO Victims’ Assistance Network, MSHP, MO Attorney General’s office, MO Office of Prosecution Services, and the Departments of Corrections, Health and Senior Services, Public Safety and Social Services are standing together for victims’ rights. On April 27, 2006 at noon, a commemorative ceremony will take place at the State Capitol, first floor Rotunda.
The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations is responsible for the administration of the Crime Victims’ Compensation Program. This program provides financial assistance to persons who have been physically or psychologically injured or killed in a violent crime. If a victim has exhausted other sources of compensation, such as health insurance, and has no other source of reimbursement, the Program can help pay for medical costs, wage loss, psychological counseling, funeral expenses and support for dependent survivors to a maximum limit of $25,000.
