Disaster Unemployment Assistance Available in Pemiscot County

Jefferson City – The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations today announced the federal government declared that individuals living or working in Pemiscot County are now eligible to receive disaster unemployment assistance.  The declaration was approved on April 5, 2006.   Individuals living or working in this county or the 36 other counties declared in the previous declarations, which are unemployed due to the recent severe spring storms and tornadoes may be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance.

The 27 counties added on March 24th are:  Bates, Benton, Boone, Carroll, Cass, Cedar, Cooper, Greene, Henry, Howard, Iron, Jefferson, Lawrence, Lincoln, Montgomery, Mississippi, Morgan, New Madrid, Newton, Phelps, Putnam, Scott, St. Clair, Taney, Vernon, Webster and Wright.

The original 9 counties declared on March 17th are:  Christian, Hickory, Johnson, Monroe, Perry, Pettis, Randolph, Ste. Genevieve and Saline counties.

Disaster unemployment assistance is intended for individuals who are not eligible for benefits under a state’s regular unemployment insurance program.  Farmers or other self-employed individuals and individuals who are denied regular unemployment insurance benefits may now be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance.

Funds for this program are provided by the federal government and do not come from the state employer payroll taxes used to finance regular unemployment insurance benefits.

Individuals who need information about how to file a claim should call (800) 788-4002.  Claims for Pemiscot County should be filed as soon as possible, but not later than May 9, 2006.  The filing deadline for the original nine counties is April 18, 2006 and April 25, 2006 for the additional 27 counties.
