SUMMER PROGRAM LETS STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES EXPLORE TRANSPORTATION
INDUSTRY
Kansas City, MO – Transportation can be a rewarding career, but
some promising young students with disabilities may be missing an opportunity
to bring their talents to the field. The University of Missouri -
Kansas City, Summer Transportation Institute (STI) will change that by
providing an exciting opportunity to 15 high school students with and without
disabilities to learn about transportation careers in an intense, four-week
program.
The STI creates awareness and stimulates interest for secondary school
students to take advantage of opportunities in the transportation industry.
The Kansas City STI is open to 9th, 10th and 11th grade students. The National
Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) is funded through a Federal Highway
Administration grant administrated by the NSTI Resource Center at South
Carolina State University. The Kansas City STI is funded through
this grant awarded to the University of Missouri – Kansas City Institute
for Human Development. Partners in this project include the Governor’s
Council on Disability, the Missouri Department of Transportation, the city
of Kansas City, Mo., the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, the
Federal Aviation Administration, the Federal Transit Administration, and
the American Association of People with Disabilities, area schools and
organizations serving youth.
Of the 45 NSTI programs nationwide, Kansas City’s is the first STI designed
as a national model for inclusion of high school students with disabilities.
Colleges and universities across the country conduct the four-week programs
designed to introduce secondary students to all modes and careers of transportation
with hands-on, interactive activities. More than 750 students at 40 colleges
participated last year and more than 5,000 students have attended STIs
since 1993.
Kansas City’s STI will include one-week activity blocks covering surface
transportation, rail, aviation, water and other modes. Students will learn
through professional presentations, field trips and transportation-related
activities. In addition, enhancement activities are designed to develop
leadership, teamwork, study and other skills. This non-residential program
begins June 21 at the Discovery Center at 48th and Troost. Review of applications
begins May 15. Contact your school adviser or call Mark Ohrenberg at (816)
235-1767 to apply. For additional information regarding the program
