Jefferson City , MO – The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics released its nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses data through the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses. The data indicated a total of 102,600 nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses in Missouri private industry in 2005. This is an increase of three percent from 99,600 in 2004. The 2005 incidence rate (number of injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers) for total recordable cases of nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses in Missouri private industry was 5.4, up from 5.3 in 2004.
Goods producing industries, such as manufacturing, construction and natural resources, as a whole had an incidence rate of 7.6 cases per 100 equivalent full-time workers in 2005. The goods producing industry sector with the highest incidence rate was manufacturing (NAIC 31-33) at 8.0. Framing contractors (NAICS 23813) was the goods producing industry with the highest incidence rate in 2005 at 14.0. Data for framing contractors was not publishable in 2004; however the 2005 incidence rate was reduced 19.1 percent from the 2003 rate of 17.3.
Service providing industries, such as retail trade, transportation, health care, leisure and hospitality, had an incidence rate of 4.7 per100 equivalent full-time workers in 2005. The service providing industry sector with the highest incidence rate was utilities (NAICS 22) with a rate of 7.9. Museums, historical sites and similar institutions (NAICS 712) were the service providing industry with the highest incidence rate in 2005 at 13.1. This reflects an 89.9 percent increase over the 2004 rate of 6.9.
The Survey is administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations’ Research and Analysis section. Occupational injury and illness data are randomly collected from approximately 5,400 Missouri employers each year.
Additional case and demographic data related to these nonfatal injuries and illnesses will be released next month by the U.S. Department of Labor. This information will provide the nature of the injury or illness, part of the body affected, source of injury or illness and event or exposure that caused the injury or illness. In addition, worker demographics, such as race, age and sex will be provided.
