Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial
Relations’ Mine and Cave Safety and Health program partners with the
Southeast Missouri Mine Safety Association (SEMMSA) each year to
present awards to southeast Missouri mining companies for excelling in
mine safety and health.
Senator Kevin Engler will be the keynote speaker for this year’s awards
banquet. Engler represents the 3rd District which includes
Carter, Reynolds, Iron, Washington, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve and
South Jefferson counties. Prior to the Senate, Engler served one
term in the House of Representatives. In addition to his
legislative duties, Engler is a registered representative for Edward
Jones. He also served six years as Mayor of Farmington, Missouri
and one year on the city council.
The awards banquet will be held on April 7, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. at the
Eagle Lake Golf and Country Club in Farmington, Missouri. During
the banquet, awards will be given to mining companies with the best
safety record and most improved underground operation and surface
mine. Awards will also be given for zero lost time
injuries.
The Department’s Mine and Cave Safety and Health Section trains
Missouri miners in the practice of implementing safe and healthy
working habits in the workplace. This section also regularly
inspects mines and public caves under Missouri law, and provides a
consultation service to the mines and caves on safety and health
issues. Safety and health inspections are conducted on a regular basis
to find and abate hazards in the mine and cave workplace. For
