SOUTHEAST MINING COMPANIES HONORED FOR SAFETY PRACTICES

Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations’ Mine and Cave Safety and Health program partners with the Southeast Missouri Mine Safety Association (SEMMSA) each year to present awards to southeast Missouri mining companies for excelling in mine safety and health.

Senator Kevin Engler will be the keynote speaker for this year’s awards banquet.  Engler represents the 3rd District which includes Carter, Reynolds, Iron, Washington, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve and South Jefferson counties.  Prior to the Senate, Engler served one term in the House of Representatives.  In addition to his legislative duties, Engler is a registered representative for Edward Jones.  He also served six years as Mayor of Farmington, Missouri and one year on the city council.

The awards banquet will be held on April 7, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. at the Eagle Lake Golf and Country Club in Farmington, Missouri.  During the banquet, awards will be given to mining companies with the best safety record and most improved underground operation and surface mine.  Awards will also be given for zero lost time injuries.

The Department’s Mine and Cave Safety and Health Section trains Missouri miners in the practice of implementing safe and healthy working habits in the workplace.  This section also regularly inspects mines and public caves under Missouri law, and provides a consultation service to the mines and caves on safety and health issues. Safety and health inspections are conducted on a regular basis to find and abate hazards in the mine and cave workplace.  For more information regarding the Mine and Cave Safety and Health Program, please visit www.dolir.mo.gov/ls/minesafety or call (573) 751-3403.
