Governor Blunt Provides Hurricane Katrina Evacuees Easy Access to Apply for Unemployment Benefits
Jefferson City, MO – Governor Matt Blunt today announced the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations has prepared a quick informational sheet for Hurricane Katrina evacuees who are eligible for unemployment insurance benefits.
Evacuees needing to file for unemployment insurance benefits or who need additional information may contact one of the Missouri Regional Claims Centers listed below.

Staff will be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.(Central Time).
Interstate Claims
- Alabama takes unemployment claims by telephone. Refer the claimants to call 1-866-234-5382 to file an interstate claim against Alabama.
- Mississippi is now taking some claims by telephone at 1-888-844-3577. If a claimant calls because they cannot get through to Mississippi to file a claim or do not have access to a telephone for an extended period of time, the claim will be filed by a Missouri Regional Claims Center. If a claimant is planning to reside in Missouri for an extended period of time, the claim should be filed through a Missouri Regional Claims Center.
- Louisiana calls are being accepted until 7:00 pm Central Time. To file a claim by telephone call 1-800-818-7811. For other help with unemployment claims, call 1-866-783-5567. To file a claim via the Internet, visit www.LAWORKS.net. For other help call 1-888-844-3577.
- Claimants who worked in any state not listed above should call a Missouri Regional Claims Center for filing instructions.
- Claimants who have difficulty contacting the state they worked in should call a Missouri Regional Claims Center for assistance.
“It’s critical we provide evacuees with an easy and convenient method for obtaining critical services they need,” said Governor Matt Blunt. “Missouri will make every effort to assist those that have been displaced as a result of Hurricane Katrina.”
