Recognition Luncheon To Honor Poster and Journalism Contest Winners

Jefferson City, MO – Six students will be honored at a recognition luncheon for their creative posters and essays submitted in the 2004 Poster and Journalism Contests sponsored by the Missouri Commission on Human Rights.  The luncheon is scheduled in Jefferson City at Viet’s Family Restaurant on April 16, 2004 at noon.  Students were asked to design a poster or write an essay based on the theme “There’s Room For All Of Us.”  Three recipients from each contest were selected to receive $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place.  Schools of winning students will each receive the same amount of prize money as awarded to the students.  The prizes come from a partnership initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

First place poster contest recipient is Christine Ricana.  Christine attends Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Jefferson City, MO.  Second place poster contest recipient is Jullia Spotts.  Jullia attends Westram R-I High School in Huntsville, MO.  Third place recipient in the poster contest is Helen Swearson.  Helen attends Ritenour High School in St. Louis, MO.

In the Journalism Contest, the first place essay recipient is Ann Wanserski.  Ann attends West Jr. High School in Columbia, MO.  Receiving second place honors in the Journalism Contest was Marie Harmon.  Marie attends Stockton High School in Stockton, MO.  Third place recipient in the Journalism Contest is Doan Dong.  Doan attends Ralph Bunche International Studies Middle School in St. Louis, MO.

The purpose of the Poster and Journalism Contests is to reward excellence in art and journalism while increasing awareness of housing issues among Missouri’s youth.  Both contests were open to students in grades 7 through 12.  Students will receive their awards during the luncheon on April 16, 2004.
