Recognition Luncheon To Honor Fair Housing Poster and Journalism Contest Winners

Jefferson City, MO - Six students will be honored at a recognition luncheon for their creative posters and essays submitted in the 2005 Poster and Journalism Contests sponsored by the Missouri Commission on Human Rights.  The luncheon is scheduled in Jefferson City at The Hotel DeVille on April 1, 2005 at noon.  Students were asked to design a poster or write an essay based on the theme “Fair Housing Changes Lives – One Yard At A Time.”

Three recipients from each contest were selected to receive $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place.  Schools of winning students will each receive the same amount of prize money as awarded to the students, with a portion earmarked for the English/journalism or art departments.  “We appreciate that the teachers devote a portion of their time and energy in assisting students in these competitions,” said Donna Noble Cavitte, MCHR’s Executive Director. “We want them to have additional resources to continue the excellent work they do for our Missouri schoolchildren.”  The prizes are paid from a partnership initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

First place poster contest recipient is Jenny Woods.  Woods attends Westran High School in Huntsville, MO.  Second place poster contest recipient is John Johnson.  Johnson attends Mexico High School.  Third place recipient in the poster contest is Kylene King.  King also attends Westran High School.

In the journalism contest, the first place essay recipient is Haylie Loges.  Loges attends Sante Fe High School in Alma, MO.  Receiving second place honors in the journalism contest is Mary Ng’ang’a.  Ng’ang’a attends Jefferson Junior High School in Columbia, MO.  Third place recipient in the journalism contest is Adithi Vellore.  Vellore attends West Junior High School in Columiba, MO.

The purpose of the Poster and Journalism Contests is to reward excellence in art and journalism while increasing awareness of housing issues among Missouri’s youth.  Both contests were open to students in grades 7 through 12.  Students will receive their awards during the luncheon on April 1, 2005.
