Missouri Mining Program Partners with Workforce Agency to Increase Job Opportunities for Miners in State
Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Division of Labor Standards’ Mine Safety Training Program is teaming up with the Missouri Division of Workforce Development’s Career Centers to provide mine training to individuals looking for work in the mining industry.
“Offering this mine training to unemployed workers will provide an additional career opportunity,” said Rod Chapel, director of the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. “The classes will give people the necessary certification to begin a career in the mining industry.”
Mine Safety Training Instructors will provide 24 hour mining courses for surface mines and 40 hour mining courses for underground mines. The training courses will include first aid and CPR, hazard awareness, crushing and conveying, drilling and blasting, electrical safety and more. The training is free of charge.
The trained workers will be placed on Great Hires, the official job pool website for the state of Missouri. Mining companies may visit Great Hires to find qualified candidates. The Career Centers also will assist the job seekers with their resumes and help mail the resumes out to companies in the mining industry.

The Missouri mining industry employs approximately 8,000 total workers and generates around $8.5 billion in production. There are approximately 450 working mines. Six hundred to eight hundred contractors and 1,000 to 1,200 vendors make up the mining community in Missouri.
The training is provided through a grant from the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The grant is 80 percent federally funded with a 20 percent match by the Missouri Division of Labor Standards’ Mine Safety Training Program.
