Missouri Department of Labor Supports Governor Blunt’s 2007 Priorities

Jefferson City – Director Rod Chapel commends Governor Blunt for his leadership and commitment to keeping his promises to the people of Missouri.  Under the Governor’s direction, Missouri has gone from having a massive budget deficit with tremendous economic uncertainty to a stable budget that promotes family supporting jobs and puts families first.

“Due to Governor Blunt’s vision and policies, funding for education is up, more than 53,000 new jobs have been created and Missouri’s economic climate has significantly improved,” said Rod Chapel, director of the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.  “I look forward to working with the governor to achieve the priorities he outlined in his State of the State address.  We will continue to utilize technology to make government more accessible to the citizens and find additional ways to provide more efficient services.”

Preparing students and workers for a global economy through quality math and science education and his Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative is a priority for Governor Blunt.   A prepared workforce permits businesses to not just retain jobs, but also create important sectors and areas of industry for years to come.

Chapel notes that “The Governor’s initiatives will help ensure that Missourians are better equipped with training and education to obtain family-supporting jobs.  It follows that a prepared workforce benefits the state as a whole with a greater opportunity to compete globally.”  The Department supports this vision through its provision of safe and healthy workplaces free from discrimination in an environment that is economically secure and assisting workers who are injured on the job or unemployed through no fault of their own.

Governor Blunt’s pro-jobs and pro-growth policies have contributed to the creation of more than 53,000 new jobs since he took office.  Blunt supported law changes made last year to the unemployment insurance system to protect employers from fraudulent claims, while preserving the integrity of the system so that benefits of workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own are protected.  Chapel attributes the advances the department has made over the last year to Governor Blunt's good leadership and further commends the Department's hardworking employees for efficiently providing services to implement the Governor’s vision.
