Missouri Receives $192,000 for Mine Safety and Health Training

JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations’ Division of Labor Standards received a $192,835 grant from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to provide mine safety and health training and education to Missouri miners in fiscal year 2006.  Missouri was one of nine states to receive a grant last week.

“The recent mining explosion in West Virginia emphasizes the importance of training and education to mine workers,” said Allen Dillingham, director of the Missouri Division of Labor Standards.  “The training provided teaches miners and the mining community on how to reduce accidents through education, training and hazard elimination.”

The grant covers training and retraining of miners working at surface and underground coal and metal and nonmetal mines, including miners who engage in shell dredging or are employed at surface stone and sand and gravel mining operations.  Missouri has approximately 450 mines.

The Division of Labor Standards’ Mine Safety and Health Training Program provides no-cost training and consultation to mine owners and workers, as well as contractors.  Consultation services include MSHA training plans, evacuations plans, ventilation plans, noise surveys, substance abuse, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, hazard awareness and elimination, and more.  The program’s mine safety instructors trained more than 5,700 miners in federal fiscal year 2005.

MSHA, a division of the U.S. Department of Labor, requires training each year for miners.  Anyone interested in scheduling a no cost training or consultation session may contact Missouri’s Mine Safety and Health Training Program at (573) 751-3403 or visit http://www.dolir.mo.gov/ls/minesafety/mine.htm
