Missouri Prevailing Wage Rates Set; Increased Participation in Wage Survey Process

Jefferson City, MO – The Labor and Industrial Relations Commission today announced that the state prevailing wage rates have been established and are now in effect for use on all Missouri public works construction projects.

The Annual Wage Order contains prevailing wage rates for each occupational title in each county and the city of St. Louis.  The prevailing wage is the minimum rate that must be paid to workers on public works construction projects in Missouri, such as bridges, roads, schools and government buildings.

The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations’ Division of Labor Standards is responsible for gathering wage information from public and private commercial construction projects statewide on an ongoing basis from contractors, labor organizations and public entities.  The wage information is used to determine wage rates for each of the 26 different occupational titles and their subgroups for every Missouri county and the city of St. Louis.  The most hours reported for a given wage rate for the occupational title in the county becomes the prevailing wage rate.  In other words, the prevailing wage is chosen by the mode method.

In an effort to increase participation in the wage survey process, the Division of Labor Standards sent out letters to over 2,200 Missouri contractors, to all labor organizations across the state and to all county commissioners.  In addition, electronic mail was sent to over 600 city clerks and all Missouri public school superintendents.

“The outreach effort was intended to encourage all interested parties to submit wage information in greater amounts than ever before,” said Rod Chapel, director of the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.  “This type of outreach campaign has not been done in the past and turned out to be very successful.”  The Division of Labor Standards received 7,889 reports listing hours worked and wage rates paid this year, a 30 percent increase from last year’s number of 6,065 reports.

Annual Wage Order No. 13 is now in effect.  To view Annual Wage Order No. 13, or for additional information, please visit the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations’ website at http://www.dolir.mo.gov/ls/prevailingwage/annual_wage.asp, email prevailingwage@dolir.mo.gov or call (573) 751-3403.
