Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations would like to congratulate the Mississippi Lime Company and Doe Run Company for winning the prestigious “Sentinels of Safety” award from the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and National Mining Association. The Sentinels of Safety is the nation’s highest mine safety award.
Mississippi Lime’s Peerless Mine, located in Ste. Genevieve, MO received the Sentinels of Safety award in the large underground nonmetal mine category, while Doe Run’s Brushy Creek Mine was recognized in the large underground metal group.
Both winning mine companies have received mine safety inspections and training from the Missouri Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Training Program. The mine program has certified instructors that train mine owners and mine workers in the practice of implementing safe and healthy habits in the workplace. “We are very pleased to hear of Mississippi Lime and Doe Run’s success,” said Steve Dunn, manager of the Department’s Division of Labor Standards’ Mine Safety and Health Training Program. “The mine training program takes great pride in knowing our training services are working and producing such results, along with the many safety programs the company provides.”

The Sentinels of Safety award is the oldest established award for occupational safety. President Herbert Hoover, a former mining engineer, announced the first awards when he was Secretary of Commerce in 1925.
